"Real Talk about HIV/AIDS"
"Real Talk about HIV/AIDS" is an HIV/AIDS education and prevention project aimed at reducing the spread of HIV in the Eau Claire community of Columbia and beyond. Developed in 2007, the project is funded by the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council with monies from the South Carolina Legislature. Our focus is on young people ages 16-24, but reaching out to others as well; HIV does not discriminate based on age. At Community, we have dedicated ourselves to not only saving souls in this area, but also saving lives.
The "Real Talk about HIV/AIDS" initiative is made up of five parts:
World AIDS Day observance,
November 30, 2008. We will come together as a body of believers to
pray for the healing of those who are infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS
in our community and throughout the world.
"Talk Back" Sessions,
November 2008. In
"Talk Back" sessions, young people will learn about HIV and AIDS, how it can
affect their future, how they can protect themselves, and how they can
communicate with their parents and guardians about tough issues. These
sessions will be run by a health professional and a member of the
ministerial staff.
"Real Talk about HIV/AIDS"
Community Youth Summit, February 28, 2009. This summit will feature basic
information about HIV and AIDS, how to protect yourself from infection, and
featured a testimony from someone living with HIV.
"Real Talk: Strictly for the
Ladies" summit, May 2009. Women of all ages are welcome to take part
in this one-day summit featuring information about HIV and STDs, as well as
other important health information for women.
"Text a Friend to Test" Day, June 2009. To mark National Black HIV Testing Day, come to Community to call and text your friends about testing. Nervous about going alone? Our project staff will be available to help!
"Real Talk" is spearheaded by Community's HIV Care Team. The Care Team works hard to provide education and information to the community about HIV, a disease that is devastating our people--God's people--locally and all over the world.
